Bad Streets, 1973, shows a diamond in the rough behind the cameras, largely overshadowed by the shortcomings of the script, and perhaps by his own immaturity. Daring camera movements, slow planes, use plenty of zoom (and in cases of zolly), the holding of American popular music (mostly rock and indie) and subtle distortions of perspective, are some elements that characterize the style of Martin Scorsese, who has impacted strongly on the cinema of recent decades, leaving significant traces in such renowned directors as Wong Kar-Wai and Quentin Tarantino. This style, although not culminaria its development to the masterpiece of the director, Toro Salvaje (1980), we can say that it reaches its maturity in Taxi Driver, tape, although a box office hit and won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Festival was virtually ignored by the Academy of Hollywood (lost to Rocky), making it work for many of worship and, eventually, in one of the most acclaimed titles and representing their decade. The film also marked the consecration of Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster as the discovery of one of the strongest performers of his generation, with only fourteen years.
Confessing to have been inspired by Robert Bresson Pickpocket, Paul Schrader, Scorsese's usual partner, create a script that insists on a number of director's constant: violence in Western culture, sexism, abuse, and his classic line of "men who seek redemption '. The controversial character, Travis Bickle, brilliantly embodied by Robert de Niro, is very much the narrator of this story, from his voice to his pantomimes, including his famous "You talking to me''(I Do these talking to me '). The influences seen in Taxi Driver are very varied, from the purest Sergio Leone to Los Siete Samurais of Akira Kurosawa. Its countless nuances us classified as a mixture of genres. Expressionist photography Michael Chapman, from the highly stylized initial showing taxi Travis smoke emerging from the sewers, as well as the excellent score by the great Bernard Herrmann, who lay here to film his latest work, we refer the atmospheres of most depressive black cinema. The skilled use of close-up, the similarities of the plot with the masterpiece of John Ford, Centauros desert (more heart to hate or The Searchers), and the possible equivalence of the character of Travis with a rider from the west, make Taxi Driver also a 'western city.
Taxi Driver found in the psychological origin of psychopaths like the one that goes against Ronald Reagan (who declared at his trial have been inspired by the film). What can we expect from a man that is inserted in a very troubled and corrupt community after the traumatic experience of war 'Scorsese portrays his native New York as a den of doom, as a sign of a society so disparate that, one end of the most controversial film (possibly dream character) makes a psychopath like Travis, a popular hero, giving rise to questions about 'who is more insane', if our protagonist who saves a girl corrupted, or characters or pimp Amoroso Palantine senator (who states that 'we the people'), already corrupt. Taxi Driver is a perfect chronicle of the United States after the Vietnam adventure, as well as a severe criticism of the resulting violence and corruption.
